Introduction
The cricket club was originally formed back in 1856. After a short period of inactivity it was reformed back in 1973. Situated at the top of the town the club site boasts excellent views of one of Cornwall’s most historic ports. As a town Fowey has a long maritime history with a busy working port often associated with the brutal, but more often romanticised smuggling trade. Today it is a popular unspoilt holiday resort as well as a busy community town.
Until 1995 the club used the playing field overlooking Polvillion Road at the front of the Community College. With the close proximity to a residential estate, there became increasing concern to residents as cricket balls all too frequently bombarded their gardens on Saturday afternoons during the summer.
Following consultation with the Head and Governors of the College, permission was granted to move onto the current playing field to the rear of the College. The site itself offered huge potential for a cricket arena, but was without changing and other essential amenities required to meet Cornwall Cricket League ground standards criteria. A joint grant aid application was submitted to the Foundation for Sport and the Arts with an award of £75,000 received. A brand new pavilion was built and officially opened in 1998 by Mr. Keith Pont - ECB National Development Manager.
The pavilion has a superb two storey layout. On the ground floor there are two changing rooms with showers and toilets; an umpires room; kitchen; large dining/social activity area; separate public and 'disability' toilets. On the first floor is members’ bar which leads onto a balcony providing an advantageous location to watch the cricket and/or admire the sea views.
To the side of the Community College, a superb new £1.7 million Leisure Centre was completed and opened in 1999. Offering outstanding indoor facilities, including a four-bay cricket net, it provides opportunities for players to work on their game during winter pre-season practice sessions. The club is currently working towards providing new outdoor practice facilities to use during the season.
